Film Panoramas is a project born out of a love of cinema and obsession with the craft of filmmaking. In this project, I capture the pan movements of the camera by taking screenshots of each frame. I take these screenshots and stitch them together as panoramas, giving a unique perspective of the full field of view of what the cinematogropher would see in the entire composition of that shot.
Film Panoramas ran as a Patreon page with 23 members for 2 years. I stitched all the pans, tilts and some dolly shots from 4 films: Hotel Chevalier, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Birdman. Each panorama is stitched manually, which is why I stopped after doing Birdman. Cheers.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty directed by Ben Stiller had a total of 48 pan shots, and 15 tilt shots, and 12 usable dolly shots, at 75 stitches total.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Grand Budapest Hotel directed by Wes Anderson had a total of 40 pan shots, and 19 tilt shots, and 11 usable dolly shots, at 70 stitches total.
Birdman
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu was difficult, because its shot as a continuous one-take I had to assume cut points of where to start and end certain panoramas. But, unlike the Wes Anderson stitched, many of these shots were handheld or unsteady, so even though there were approximately 148, only about 80 could be made into pan shots with only 6 tilt shots, with 154 stitches total.
